I have an RRA AR 15 purchased used.  I'm not exactly sure of the model, but it looks like this one:  http://www.rockriverarms.com/images/products/pumid.gif

At a local gun show last weekend, I purchased a tactical stock similar to this one:  http://www.ar15pro.com/item/69945_Tapco__Inc_Grips_Pads_Stocks_TAPCO_STOCK_AR15_T6_BLK_C.aspx however, it  did not come with the buffer tube.

So, I get home, take the butt stock off my AR and find that the buffer tube on my AR is round.  The tactical stock is setup for a round tube with a tab protruding below.  So, there is no way to keep it on the buffer tube.

I'm looking for just a buffer tube, and happen across this:  http://www.dsarms.com/AR15-M4_CAR-5-Position-Mil-Spec-Buffer-Tube––––-MAM4BFR/productinfo/MAM4BFR/ that is reasonably priced.  Will that work on my AR, and if so, do I need special tools or anything to get the tube off?  (sorry big newbie here).

They make two different types of buffer tubes commercial and mil-spec and they are different diameter. You need to know which type the stock you purchased requires and get the proper one, I would bet the Tapco stock requires a commercial tube but I am not sure.  You will also need a castle nut, and  the proper carbine buffer and spring to go with the buffer tube so your rifle functions correctly.

ETA: you will also need the end plate that goes between the receiver and castle nut and a spanner wrench to tighten the castle nut wouldn't be a bad idea or you can use a strap wrench if you have one.

I just got a couple of Mil-spec buffer tubes from AIM for $20 each. But if I had to guess, I'd agree that TAPCO stocks are probably commercial.

The stock I purchased was some off brand - said "fits most AR 15s".  It was like ADM or ATD or something - I'll look when I get home tonight.

Sounds like it would maybe be cheaper to buy a complete tactical stock like this one:  http://www.mountsplus.com/miva/merchant.mvc?page=MSP/PROD/TAPCO_AR-15_STOCKS/STT-STK09161-XX

Is this complete, and will just bolt on to my RRA AR, or will it require additional parts (such as the end plate and castle nut mentioned previously)?

Is this the proper spanner wrench?  http://blackbearhardware.com/spannerwrench.html

The rifle you said you bought in the original post has an A2 stock mounted.

You can't mount a collapsible/adustable stock on an A2 buffer tube.

You will have to purchase a carbine buffer tube before you can use the stock you purchased.  Tapco stock generally require the commercial carbine tube.

ETA:  check to make sure the tube you purchase comes with the castlenut and endplate.  If not, you will need to purchase both.

Just about any buffer tube spanner wrench will work.  I'd recommend spending $20 or $25 and getting a good multi-purpose AR15/M16 wrench.  That way you'll also have the ability to change out barrels should the need arise.

ETA 2: the spanner wrench you listed doesn't look particularly sturdy.  This is what you're looking for.  Here's one at CDNN Sportsfor $25...you need to buy it.

from the pic it looks like everything is included, but, if this is going to be more than a plinking gun, i would recomend spending a little more $$$ and getting yourself some better parts than that.

try Bravo Company.  better quality and you get to choose your buffer weight.

yes, that wrench will do the job,

Ok - so this is a 1x red dot scope carbine meant for no more than 100 yard accuracy.  which buffer upgrade would I want then?  Carbine Buffer (optional upgrade to H, H2, H3 buffers)

buffer weight doesn't affect accuracy.  It has more to do with slowing the action and improving reliability.

IMO, get a heavy buffer and be done with it.

ETA: too heavy a buffer can cause issues too.  An H buffer will suffice.
