I use Q-Tips wetted with brake cleaner followed by alcohol.  Make sure to test the brake cleaner on a non-visible area first.  Any thing that will degrease and leave no residue is fine.

Lauer Weaponry's DuraCoat Degreaser is pretty excellent.

I used alcohol, then crayon/grease pen, then alcohol again to remove the excess. This will stay in place well but is not as permanent as paint, it is far cheaper in most cases, and you get more selection in colors. The writing on my Glock has been green for a few years now through multiple cleanings and AR roll marks are plenty deeper then Glock’s.
