But I need some help with the barrel. I'm looking to build around a 11-12 inch. I don't see many options out there so I'm thinking my best bet is to chop down a 16" carbine barrel. I'm not horribly worried about tack driver accuracy, but I would like it to be good. I also don't want it to be too expensive because I want to occasionally blast off some wolf through it and don't want to wear out a $500 barrel, so I guess that goes with durability.

I just saw This in their newsletter today, and it looks like the perfect candidate. Cold hammer forged, chrome lined, 1 in 7, carbine length, and cheap. Anything else to consider before ordering one up?

DD makes good barrels im just partial to Bravo.
Bravo 11.5" Barrel

You have plenty of options in the 11.5, here are some examples

Bravo Co
Colt
Sabre
CMMG

the 12.5 is a little harder to find especially in a non stainless cofiguration. Larue, Novekse and White Oak make 12.5 stainless barrels. Right now your only option if you want chrome lined is to have a 14-16'' barrel chopped down.

Wolf will NOT harm your weapon.

Yeah, I'm not worried about actual damage, like running a file through the bore, but I was talking with the guys over at superior barrels on this subject and they said that the plated steel jacket tends to wear it down faster than normal. Again I'm not too worried, but it's just something to consider.

I like the Bravo company barrels, too. I would really like one of their cold hammer forged ones, but they are more expensive. Seeing as I'll be doing the chopping I'll save a little. Where is the 11.5 measured from? The bolt face, or the back of the extension?

I guess it depends on which would be more durable. I hear good things all the time about CHF barrels, so that makes me lean towards the DD, but I won't have to refinish or put any effort into the bravo. I'd rather keep the $100, but if the bravo barrels are THAT much better I'll get one of those.

There have been many threads here over the years about wolf and the jackets wearing the barrel out. I think that 99.999% of the end users out there will never know if it truly wears the barrel out quicker or not. I very seriously doubt that it does. Also keep in mind that the Superior guys sell match grade barrels and are probably looking at it from that point of view. I look at a AR as something that in time will wear out and have to be replaced there is no getting around it if you shoot alot.

Now back on topic, sorry about that.
1. You will be just fine with the regular Bravo compared to the CHF. Again the majority of users arent going to shoot enough to notice the difference.
2. It sounds like you will be cutting it yourself? Have you had any experience doing this?
3. I've always measured from the back of the extension
4. Are you familiar with the class 3 process?

edit: sorry if my post sounds like I'm being a dick. Looking back at it it kind of appears that way.

Correct barrel length measurement is from the face of the closed bolt.

If you measure to the rear of the extension, your actual barrel length (as defined by the ATF) is going to come up short. Wouldn't really matter with this barrel, since it's NFA anyway.

But it could buy you a large order of FAIL (with tossed salad on the side) if you were trying to build a barely-legal non-NFA upper.

ETA: By "back of the barrel extension" I assumed you meant the very end of the BE (where the bolt enters). If you were referring to the end that butts against the barrel, then I have it ass-backwards. A barrel measured this way will be longer if measured down the bore.

I will probably measure from the tip and just take 5" off. I still haven't decided what one to get.

I also agree about the Wolf, I'm not too worried, but it will never find itself inside my SPR chamber!

Well, I decided to go with the BCM barrel, so I made up a spreadsheet of all of the parts I was going to get. Totaling $609. I added up all the parts and was browsing through other sections before I ordered and noticed they had the BFH uppers at an intro price for $619! So I decided to go with that and even get some more parts out of the deal (FSB, bird cage, charging handle, delta ring) that ends up being less, AND it has a CHF barrel! What a deal!

BCM +1!
