I have an Armalite M-15 A4 SPR RIFLE and want to put a collapsible stock on it.  Can I just go get a stock and replace the one I have or do I need to replace the 'guts' also?

My son really wants to shoot the rifle, but the stock is too long.  I figure and adjustable one would solve that problem real quick.

Thanks.

You need to replace the guts as well. The buffer tube and buffer and spring are longer on the fixed stock.

Depends on your local laws.  I don't know what the law in IA is, but if it is legal to own an AR with a collapsable buttstock, then all you need to do is unscrew the fixed stock and replace it with a collapsable stock.  Just watch out for the spring and detent for the rear takedown pin.

bummer.  can anyone recommend a good kit that would have everything I need?  I don't want anything fancy, just a simple adjustable stock until the little guy is big enough for a full size gun.

Are you sure? I was positive that the buffer tube length was longer in the fixed stocks.

You need to replace the extension, spring, buffer and get a castle nut and end plate.  There are two complete kits on this page.  Everything you need except the stock.  If you get the mil spec, buy a mil spec size stock - commercial, get the commercial stock.  I'd suggest a MOE for simplicity and price.

Note:  As mentioned if you haven't taken a stock off there is a spring and detent to the right of the stock on the receiver.  Be careful pulling the stock off so you don't lose them.  If you want to be safe, order an extra spring and detent when you order the stock kit.

They are #16 and #17 on this page:

so it looks like I can get kits of the guts and kits of a stock with guts.  Thanks for the links.

and not to start a war...but commercial or milspec?  which one?  Does it matter?

Without a war - if I was buying it new I'd get the milspec.  If a rifle came with a commercial extension I wouldn't change it unless necessary.  For your described purpose either will be sufficient so it is whatever you want to spend.

I think many will agree that there are a few more choices in the mil-spec version.

Well, I'm not an expert.  But I'm talking about replacing the whole stock as a unit: stock, buffer tube, spring, buffer, castle nut, the whole shebang.  When I built my M4gery, I found a RRA milspec complete butt stock on eBay with buffer and spring.  Bolted it on and it has worked flawlessly ever since.  No issues.  No I didn't try to keep the buffer tube from an old stock, or keep the spring.  I bought the new butt stock as a complete unit and it works fine.
