I am looking at doing my first build. I am doing the build in honor of a friend and former officer that was murdered last year. He loved guns and I want something he would be proud of.
In order to do this, I need parts. Since I have never done a build before, I want to compose a checklist so I don't miss any parts. The rifle is going to be a 16 inch m4gery. Not a lot of gizmo's and stuff, just a KISS rifle for plinking. I want an a3 upper, buis, collapsible stock, and a simple rail to mount a VFG. I am not adding any lights or laser or anything else....just a VFG to help hold it steady. I might add an optic later as funds become available. so far I figure I need: Lower LPK Grip Trigger guard Extension Tube Stock Castle Nut Buffer w/spring A3 Upper Carry Handle Bolt Group Charging Handle Barrel with barrel nut Gas Tube Flash Hider Hand Guards or Rail System VFG BUIS(if funds allow) I know I am missing something guys so tell me what it is. At this point, please do not recommend vendors or were to get parts, I just need a checklist so I don't miss anything. As I get into the build I will be on here asking for plenty of opinions on manufactures vendors. Thanks for any input anyone can add. |

LPKs come with an A2 grip, so if that's the one you want to use, you don't need to purchase it seperately. Trigger guards come with the LPK. Some grips such as the MIAD and Stark have built in trigger guards. If you don't like the stock trigger guard there are other options available from MagPul, KAC, and RRA, possibly more. ETA: The MIAD doesn't have to use the built in trigger guard, it's just an option. 2. You left out the end plate. This is assuming you're going with a collapsible stock. Fixed stocks won't need the end plate or castle nut. You can purchase a complete stock kit that includes all parts, or one minus the stock itself. 3. You don't really need the carry handle if you're getting an A3 upper. Might as well spend the money that would be spent on the carry handle on a BUIS. 4. Decide which barrel and handguard you want to use. Not all barrels come with barrel nuts. Handguards will generally come with a barrel nut so long as they don't use the standard barrel nut. 5. If you're buying a barrel assembly it will generally come with the barrel nut and flash hider, possibly the gas tube. One important part you left out is the gas block. Barrel assemblies will include this, either in the form of a front sight base, low profile gas block, or railed gas block. 6. VFG is not required, completely up to the end user. |

Your list is missing the end plate that keeps the buffer tube in place. You'll need a gas block if you don't go with the standard FSB. If you want a BUIS then buy it now and forget the carry handle. If you intend to assemble your upper then you'll need some tools; barrel wrench, action block, and barrel vise jaws. |
| checklist at brownells or midway usa. i know they are vendors but you can print the list out and buy wherever you want. the list i used even let you pick if you wanted a LPK or if you wanted to buy each part individually. pretty detailed stuff if you really want a checklist. |
