I have had my Varmit/longer ranger AR complete but haven't put optics on it yet.  I has thinking of going with a 44mm objective because I thought the 50mm might look weird.  After some thought and looking through others pics I have decided to go with a 50 after all.  I have a 50mm on my bolt action and believe I would miss the power and view of the 50.

Anyway.........This will be going on a A2 flat top style upper.  Do I need a Larue spr or an American Defense Ad-recon style mount?  And even If I don't need it will I be happier with one?  Even If I don't get one of those I will still have $100 in a set of high rise rings to clear the scope, and then what about eye relief?  On a cheaper note RR sells one but I don't believe I would be happy with it, they call it their Hi-Rise scope mount.

Thanks in advance

Install a 1" riser block on the flat top upper rail ( about $ 20 + freight ) and you will have an almost unlimited choice of rings .  Think I used a common set of Weaver rings ( about $ 10 - 15 at Walley World ) .

God bless

I tried 3 different set-ups before finally buying an SPR-E.  To me, it is the only way to go.

LRT SPR FTW!

I have a LT-104 on mine, and I couldn't imagine getting any other brand of mount in the future.

I also went with the Lt-104 and have been very happy with it.

another for the larue. these are the top for the line. the only people that argue different, have never used one. look to see with your gun if you really need the spr-e. the lt-104 works perfect for me. i think ironmaker might have a really long neck. or maby it works better for him.

You're right about the long neck

I'm 6'4" w/ long arms and a long neck.

I like my scopes more forward than most.

what other mounts did you use before the spr-e?

Scope mounted on risers on the upper receiver:

Scope mounted on YHM 5" extension:

Different scope in LaRue SPR-E. I put the 8.5-25X50 on my Rem 700 .308 and put the 4.5-14X40 on my Varminter

Another for the SPR.  I'm using the LT-104 with a 50mm objective lens and it clears everything fine.  This is on an LAR-8.

LaRue LT-104 w/ MK4 8.5-25 50mm objective.  It even cleared the Magpul MBUS.

I like the Armalite one piece bases. The new JP ones are nice too.

Here's a $55 (used) Armalite with a 50mm Leupold.

Good call.  Anyone else have an opinion?

I've found that sometimes I need multiple sets of rings and or bases to get the scope centered for MY eye.   I try  to keep as much scope body centered over the base, and as low as possible to the base.

I'd be interested where these 1" risers are.  Never seen them.  Sounds like a no-go, unless you want a cantilever attached to your sight.

otice the eye piece is near the upper edge of the stock in all the images.  Imagine moving up another 1".  No cheek weld in my mind, but I'm new to this.

You want the center of the scope 1.4" off the bore.  That is what the sight height on the a2 irons are.  It will be right for most people out there.  As to how far forward it comes down to whether you want to shoot nose to charging handle or not. I do when I shoot irons, but scopes I move back some even though I can move the scope forward.  I use the YHM riser/extension and don't have a problem with it.  It is not as nice as the Larue or have the QD or rezero feature.  But it works for what I need and until someone can put their scope with a Larue mount on my rifle and shoot a better group I will take my money saved.  As for the argument of the extra connections and screws, bolt actions have a base and then rings that attach to them and nobody seems to have a problem with that set up.

I got my RRA Predator Pursuit a few months back and I’m scoping it for hunting yotes next year with a 3x9.  I used Bushmaster Riser Blocks for Picatinny Rail Flat-tops and Weaver style rings.  I changed over to a BSA 8X32X44 scope for my clubs 300 yard matches just recently and it’s shooting tight groups at 100 yards 5/16”
