How?
Backstory is I bought a 14.5 LMT upper and one of the front sling ears on the front sight assembly is shorn off. So it looks like crap and I can't mount a sling holder in the traditional spot. I contacted LMT and they said they would basically have to replace the entire barrel assembly, at what I assume would be my expense as they "drill the front sight into the barrel." So how do I go about removing the front sight from the barrel to replace with another. I tried a hammer and punch and I don't seem to be moving the pins. Thanks. |

Yea getting the front sight replaced will be a problem if you want the same sight tower installed. You could buy a sight or gas block that you bolt on like one of these.
The pins on the front sight are sometimes tapered and will only come out one way. You can damage the finish of your barrel twisting the old sight off. How about taking off the other ear and using a Side Sling Adaptor |
| The LMT upper assembly I got about a month ago had straight pins. Took a good amount of force to hit them out with a punch. You will have to take off your muzzle break as well to slide the sight off. Its pretty easy not to scratch your barrel if you are even a little bit careful. The muzzle break takes about 60 ft-lbs to get it off and I would suggest mounting it in a vice designed to hold ARs so you don't damage anything. |

LMT uses straight pins. You need to have enough support and force to get them moving. This is an interference fit so its not very easy.
LMT is correct, the FSB and barrel are drilled as a set. Its not a easy project to swap FSB's A jig of somesort is also required to hold the FSB in alignment. Here are my instructions on installing an undrilled FSB on a undrilled barrel. http://www.brdengineering.com/FSB_Installation_Jig.php |
