I am having trouble removing the barrel from an upper. I've never done this before so I don't know how much pressure is needed to remove the barrel nut and I don't want to destroy anything. Also, I don't have an armorers wrench so I am using standard pliers. I won't be using the barrel nut again so it doesn't matter if it gets damaged. Any advice would be appreciated.

buy an action block and a tool, unless you want to buy another upper.....

Seriously... Use the right tools, or find someone local that has the right tools.

You'll be kicking yourself in the ass if you destroy something.

The spec is at at least 30ft-lbs with the armorer wrench and no more than 80ft-lbs to line up the tabs to fit the gas tube.  The wrench adds several inches to the torque points so actual torque at the nut may be 37-100ft-lbs (a guess, but its still greater than the actual torque set in the wrench), then take into account the nut is steel and the receiver is aluminum exposed to heat, meaning they very likely corroded together, and will take even more torque to remove than was used to install it.  You're NOT going to accomplish this with pliers.

Seen the advice to use a Pipe Wrench if the tabs on the barrel nut have been damaged and you can't grip it with the armorers wrench, if your just going to toss the barrel nut, then this might be an option to consider.

Without an action block or some "SAFE" way to secure the upper/barrel to counteract the torque to take the nut off and put the new nut on, you can't do it, many of the improvised ways of securing an upper ends up in just cracking or breaking an upper.  How do you plan on torquing down the new NUT without an armorers wrench?  Do you have a forearm with a custom nut that uses standard wrenches?

Either way, without the proper tools you are VERY LIKELY TO DAMAGE SOMETHING.

I just swapped my upper receiver with a barrel wrench and a proper vice block.  I'm so glad I spent the 55 dollars.

Get the right tools.  I had to use the armorers wrench and a breaker bar to get the barrel nut off when I took my upper apart a few weeks ago.

If you aren't going to buy the proper tools, go to the Home Town Forum and ask for some one nearby to loan the tools to you.

Give them a 6 pack for helping you.

Im getting ready to change to a FF......gasblock, and barrel nut have to come off.
I just ordered one of the vise blocks that go up into the magwell and then you lock the bottom part of that down in the vise......any danger of damaging the lower with this vise block rather than using the clamp block that surrounds the entire upper/lower?

wowowowo....do not use just that to remove the barrel nut or torque it back down, you will more than likely crack your upper and possibly your lower. Order yourself an action block to support the entire upper, or get DPMS block that fits into the inside of the upper. Not sure if anyone has dealt with this company, but this is the cheapest I have seen the kit. click me
