I just worked on installing my barrel today with a LaRue handguard and ran into a problem.  I am using a torque wrench and at 30ft lbs, the hole on the handguard nut is just barely past the point of lining up correctly with thegas tube hole.  When I set it to 80ft lbs, It is a little short of lining up with the next hole in the barrel nut.  I would probably have to go to at least 100 to get that to line up.  I have done the tighten then loosen thing several times and it stays the same way.  Should I just set it to 30 and back up slightly to line it up or...?

never back up the barrel nut to get it to line up!

just don't go to 30 ft/lb. or are you literally stuck between 2 specific holes? try setting the wrench to 50 otherwise. I'd first start by just going with the original hole, and not quite 30 ft/lbs.

I am literally stuck between the 2 holes.  The first hole is just a cunt hair below 30 (probably no less than 25) and the next one is probably over 100.

- Apply plenty of grease to the barrel nut threads and the receiver threads.
- Do not attempt to reach alignment in one torquing. See the -23&P on using the 3X torque method.

Most often it takes more than three tighten-loosen sequences to get alignment, but you want to gradually reach your alignment, not in one torque application.

That's exactly what I have done.  Tightened, loosened, re-tightened several times over.  Plenty of grease on it.  I'll probably just give it another go and throw extra grease on it once my gas block comes in.  Thanks.

I had to go to 90 ft lbs on one of my builds. It just was'nt going to happen any other way.I went gradually though not all at one time.I loosened and tightened many times and used plenty of moly.It was either not enough or too much.I trust 90 lbs more than I trust less than 30 ft lbs.If it's less than 30 I don't think it will hold up.I went and shot it I was surprised with the accuracy. It shot tight groups.

try triple torque again.  I have gone to 80 before on a build for proper timing.

Got a chance to give it another go yesterday and I got it on right finally.  It's sitting right at 80ft lbs perfectly lined up.  What I did was throw some extra grease on, tightened, loosened, then retightened a few times over 80ft lbs, then it ended up lining up perfectly exactly at 80.  Now my first build is finally done!  Just gotta borrow the camera from my gf to show it off on here.
