Arrrg.  Anyway, I'm working on my very first build,*i already own a Colt 6920 as of a week ago ).

Anyway, I installed the mag catch and trigger guard without any hitches, slot A into slot B etc.  Then I got into the installation of the Bolt catch.  In case you haven't anticipated, this is where the story goes bad.  I was unclear as to how to install the BOLT CATCH SPRING, so I put it into the hole, but the book I had said it needed to be in deeper.  So I put the bolt catch buffer into the spring, took one of my punches and tapped it.  Well, long story short, the bloody spring is now jammed deep into the hole (why do they make the whole so deep?????) and I can't get it out.

So.....anyone have any tips for the idiot? (thats me in case your wondering )

the bolt catch right?

there is a spring that goes in, then a plunger thing that goes in over that.  then you tap a roll pin through the actual bolt release...

are you missing the plunger?

You need to look in the build it yourself section here,. There are some very good pictoral directions for assembly.

I know i'm risking flaming for this, but would it hurt anything if I left the old spring jammed down in there, and bought a new spring and installed that one (note: the "plunger" is NOT jammed in, but is fine and out of the reciever)  How deep is this spring supposed to be set into the hole?

Did you try using a metal pic? If you can get it out and the spring is mangled don't worry, they are cheap to replace. I destroyd the bolt catch roll pin on my first build by using the wrong type of punch and had to order another one. Don't worry, its happens to the best of us.

Thanks that makes me feel a little better.

I've tried to pick the spring out with tiny screw driver, tiny punch etc, and haven't had any luck.

Any suggestions?

Go to a hardware store and buy yourself a small set of o-ring picks or run a drill bit the size of the hole or smaller in and spin it with your fingers till it breaks the spring loose.

My tip is put the correct spring in the hole after you get the wrong one out.
sounds like you may have put the disconnector spring in the bolt catch hole.

OK, thnx so much, cause your drill bit strategy worked perfectly!

I was worried about this, because they look very similar to my un-trained eye.  Is there a definable way that I can tell them apart?  Or should I just work by the method of elmination, and try the other one this time?

Sounds like this is the problem to me, too.

hello, I am new to this forum but, not new to ar-15s/M-16A2s.  I was wondering if you could help me out, I have a yankee hill free float quad rail with anti rotate screws installed and I was wondering if this is a sturdy rail or did I buy junk?

YHM makes good stuff from my experience. I have them on all of my ARs

i almost did the same thing, and it was a disconnect spring, got it stuck in the hole a little bit, just used some thin tweezers to get it out.

Get some dental picks, they're awesome for scraping or picking (who would've guessed?) at stuff.
