[ARCHIVED THREAD] - handguard length

am building a "as close as I can" replica of the Army's SDM-R. I ordered a 20" douglas barrel with flutes. The barrel maker (CLE) siad it was a rifle length gas system. I will put a sight tower gas block.

Question - what size hand guard? I realize I can put a rifle lenght on, but most of the pics I see have mid-lenght (I think).

Found a nice thread titled "show us your SDM-R". It appears that they all were rifle lenght handguards.

I am still a newbie so, let me know if I am clueless on handguard lenghts.

How much extra weight do you add going from a 10" rail to 13" on a 16" barrel - will it change the handling dramatically?

Ears open...I'm curious about the Troy 13.8 inch rail on a 16" barrel myself??

Mid length on a rifle length gas system would leave several inches of the gas tube exposed. I doubt that's something the Army would do.
