I took the barrel off of my LMT piston using the supplied torque wrench and now in the process of putting it back together. I never used one before. Do I just tighten it till the wrench won't move at all or should I tighten it until I hear a "click"?

Most torque wrenches, when they hit the set torque value, will alert the user with some type of indication whether it be a click, beep or whatever

Not sure what kind of torque wrench you have but normally you set the wrench to a predetermined torque value and then wait for the click.

most important...... what kind of tourque wrench. click type....dial. if it is a click type....at low tourque settings ....if you are new to the wrench you may pull through the tourque without noticing...  practice on something and get the feel. it's easy....if you do it all the time. or if you are pulling 400 lb ft. at lower tourque....get used to the feel. - If the torque wrench is the audible type, then you’ll hear a click and feel the wrench “break away” when you reach your set torque.

- Some torque wrenches simply “break away” when you reach your set torque, without an audible indication.

- There are also dial indicating and beam type torque wrenches that must be observed while torquing. These types give no indication.

- The newer digital type torque wrenches that I have used, “beep” and vibrate when achieving their set torque.

Make sure you don't change the setting on the torque wrench(it should have been set to 140 at the factory) or you can break the bolts.

I tighten it as far as it goes until it won't move. Didn't hear a click. I know that torque wrench is junk but it's Sunday and I feel like playing with fire. The manual states " pull handle until you feel and/or hear wrench click.". Duh, which one is it, feel or hear click?

I wish LMT would just supply a better wrench. This thing has a range of 60-960 in pound range!

You will harm most, if not ALL torque wrenches by using them in reverse.  If you really did use it to take the barrel off... I would have it re caliberated.

I am not familiar with the LMT torque wrench, but 140 in lbs is only around 12 ft lbs.  You more than likely either trashed the torque wrench or you are way past tight.

I wouldn't spend the money on recalibrating the torque wrench, I would go by one from Craftsman that will have free calibrations forever...which you should do once a year.  They are about $100 for a decent in lb click, which is probably why LMT doesn't supply a better one, but frankly, I am surprised they supply one at all.

If you want a better torque wrench, here is a dial torque wrench.  I haven't used that brand, and I don't see Craftsman offering a version of the Snap-On one I have, but for an inch pound wrench, that is the style to get....unless you are working in an engine and you will have both cause you won't be able to always see the dial...so you need a click.  These can go either direction without damaging them, so long as you NEVER go past the max torque specified.  The best part is you can spin the dial to the torque you want, and then torque to 0, rather than trying to read an odd number dash while torquing.

Quick torque wrench related story:

In the Army we had a pilot who wanted to help out during a service on his aircraft. He wanted to help so he could “learn more about the aircraft”.

He wanted something to do so one of my guys set a torque wrench for him, and told him he could torque a coupling on the tail rotor drive shaft. The torque was something in the range of 60-80 in/lbs.

The pilot comes back a couple minutes later with the torque wrench body in one hand, and the ratcheting head from the torque wrench in the other hand. The guy had broke the torque wrench.

The torque wrench was the kind I describe above that “breaks away” when it reaches the torque it’s set to. This is the only indication you have of reaching your desired torque. The pilot was unaware of this, and during tightening he continued to tighten past the setting the torque wrench was set to. He ended up snapping off the head of the torque wrench which was a small 0-150 in/lbs type.

I understand where your coming from, but give some of the Mtx guys a little credit. Some of us do have an education beyond HS.

I am with you man, that was a joke.....well in some cases.  I am a maintainer myself, have been for 14 years now.  And no, I haven't finished my degree yet.
