I looked through the faq, and it is a bit overwhelming.  Please excuse this post, but I thought if I could get some info in one place here it would help me get started.  I have a couple of stripped lowers, and they are stamped with 5.56 I believe.  First question, can I legally use one to have a 9mm upper with?  Next question is do I build it with the standard receiver parts?  9mm buffer? Receiver block?  I probably would look at buying a complete upper perhaps Rock River, but there is also the issue of magazines.  The idea of Sten mags is enticing due to cost, but getting 10 - 15 mags for $30 or so each isn't necessarily out of the question.  You experienced folks probably see where I'm going with this.  Any help getting started is appreciated.  Thanks.   Should I avoid any aggravation and just buy a Colt?

Yes you could use any AR lower with a 9mm upper, the only modification you would need would be the 9mm hammer, 9mm buffer, and magazine block.

Your first choice would be what kind of mags you prefer to use and find out if they make a mag block adapter for it.

In my case I have two mag blocks a Hahn for Colt type mags and a VM Hy-Tech for Uzi mags which I have more of from my Uzi carbine.

I have a RRA flat top A4 9mm upper with 9mm bolt and so far so good, I'm not using optics on it now but I will be mounting my old EOTech on it as soon as I get another dot sight for my other carbine.

Colt 9mm carbines are more reliable but they don't come with a flat top rails which is a must for optics, if you prefer not to use optics and wanted it for possible defense use, it would be a good choice but for more money both for gun and mags.
