I just took a FSB that has been on there 25years.

Find the smaller side of the taper pin and place the barrel on something solid.  If the FSB moves at all when you hit it - it would come off - Then get a sturdy punch and beat it out!  Really hit her hard!

they are the same size on both sides so im guessing it  can go either way. i was hoping someone had a different way of getting it off, or using some make shift tool

They may look the same size - unless you're sure, they probably drive out left to right.  The Stag and S&W pins drive out right to left. I soaked mine with WD-40 for several days, and then used a 2/32" nail set punch with a concave tip and a solid hammer. It takes some BIG hits to get them broken loose, but then they'll pop out easily.

If I am not mistaken the SHOULD be driven out from left to right (the left as you aim the rifle)
I couldn't get mine off for the life of me, a small part of the problem being the pins had a
rounded side so it was hard to get a punch to stay on it. I locked it up in a vise, and hit it.
Nothing happened, I tried heat and cold and tapping the FSB with a hammer and penetrating oil.
I then tried hitting it really hard, still nothing. So I went for broke and hit it much harder then
I thought I should, the pin nudged, and then it was easy. YMMV

I'm 100% sure of this on the S&W M&P15 - was told this by Smith & Wesson tech support and it was the only way I could get the pins out on my rifle. The first time I posted that these pins drive out right to left, several answers came back that Stag is set up the same way. No personal experience with this, but since Stag made the first M&P15's it seems reasonable to assume that they drive out the same way.
