Hello All!

I just want to say hi to everyone and introduce myself. My one question so far in deciding to build from a kit is are there specialized tools anyone can recommend for assembling the lower? Anything that might be required or just make it easier? Thank-you all!

A set of punches is really helpful. I bought a cheap set of Smith and Wesson punches from (I think) Midway. They're not great, but they did the job and cost very little (about $20). I also got a set of vise blocks; helpful, but you could certainly make the lower without them. An AR-tool is good for tightening the stocks, but again I you might find a work-around on that. The punches are probably about the only thing you'd really have a headache without, as far as I can remember.

I just built my lower yesterday. Didnt have any punches. Just a ballpeen hammer, needle nose pliers, and lots of electrical were all I used. The hardest part I encountered was installing the roll on the bolt catch. Hammer was not an option. I wrapped some pliers with tape and basically pressed it in. Overall though it was a pretty good experience.

If you watch the video on assembling a lower.  You will see why I didn't want to use a hammer and punch.
I held the pins with needle nose pliers a squeezed them into place with taped up channel locks.

A lower reciever vise block such as the one Brownells offers will make assembly alot easier.  Not necesary, but very handy when installing and

adjusting trigger components.

Thanks for all the good info, just trying to get an idea, I ordered my lower on friday and once that comes in I'll order the rest, I know I'll probably be waiting 10 months for an upper but it's all good.

If you are also asssembling the upper an upper reciever vice block is essential for getting the barrel nut tightened and a good 1/2" torque wrench is great for peace of mind (although not absolutely necesary).  I just completed my first build and was amazed at how easy and enjoyable the process was.  I had a couple of questions along the way which were quickly answered here in the BIY forum and before I new it I was looking at a new rifle.  Have fun with it...
