If i buy an empty stock, does it matter which buffer and spring i buy? Does it have to be a certain type/compatible with stock or are they standardized?

There is one buffer for A1/A2 stocks.

There are several buffers for collapsable stocks.

Fixed stocks take rifle buffers and buffer springs.

Collapsible stocks take carbine buffers and buffer springs.

The two different types can not be intermixed.

There are at least three fixed stocks that do not use the A1/A2 rifle buffer.

I’m referring to standard A1/A2 fixed stocks. Not aftermarket variants. But thanks for bringing that up.

ETA: And Ban Era fixed "collapsables" such as the Bushmaster version did infact take full length buffers and springs.
