I have an upper of unknown origin.  It has the birdcage type muzzle break and I want to switch to a vortex hider.  There is one pin on the underside, I don't see any welds and there appears to be some type of grease between the break and barrel where you normally see a crush washer.  Is this a press on?  Sorry I would add pics but may camera is not available now.  If it is a press on, is there enough meat to be threaded by a gunsmith or will it have to be cut then threaded?

Thanks,
Jim

When your camera is available take some pics and post them.

Not seeing a weld is not a solid indicater of pinning. Good welds and finish can be very convincing when done correctly. How long is the barrel - F.H.? If it's shorter than the typical 16", it's probably pinned, or at least, should be. As you already see a pin, that's your answer. Check out how to remove a pinned FH in the tabs above in this section.

Thanks, I found the thread on removing a pinned break.  Here is a picture taken with my camcorder, the quality is not that good but you can see the split pin.  So is this enough to tell if it's a press on or could it still be threaded and just pinned?  If it is pressed on I won't bother trying to remove it, I'll let the gunsmith do it.http://s677.photobucket.com/albums/vv139/k5cqb/?action=view¤t=ar15comp.jpg

Sorry, couldn't get the image to load so here is a link.  http://s677.photobucket.com/albums/vv139/k5cqb/?action=view¤t=ar15comp.jpg
The pic is the bottom of the muzzle break, there are no pins or evidence of welding on the top or sides.
