I am getting ready to build my first AR. That is of course assuming that I can still find parts that are still available in this buying frenzy.

Anyway, what company makes the best lowers? Is there a difference, or are they all good? Are there any that I should avoid?

i think as of now, with everyone buying them, if will be good if u can get one at all, no matter who makes it. the prices keep going up. i got an additional one before they sold out everywhere. probably the best place to poke around would be gunbroker. ive heard that larue is a great company....

I own a couple of different lowers, and I am very impressed with the quality of my Spikes Tactical.

They're easy to find, just a little more expensive.  LaRue is an excellent company.  I've placed a few orders from them and couldn't be happier with their service, (plus the swag is always fun to get too).

one of my lowers is a RRA and the other that is sitting in a drawer unassembled is a doublestar. i cant speak too much about the doublestar.. considering i havent taken it out as a full rifle shooting. it seems like it will last a long time if its taken care of. has a nice semi gloss finishing. the RRA is great as well, and has a nice flat black finish

If you chose LaRue for your upper and lower you'll end up spending more, but it's a superior product to your average AR parts/rifles.

Pick the roll mark you like. It's hard to find bad lowers as long as you stay away from Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorne. I like Mega's the best, but tastes vary widely. I'm also biased towards forged units vs. billet machined such as SunDevil, Vltor, Larue. Those are all top notch makes, I just prefer a forged lower. The billet models are also a bit more expensive due to the man hours involved in the machining process. However, if a person's looking to build something slightly different from the rest, a billet could be the ticket.

There really isn't too much difference in lowers. Most are forged 7075-T6 aluminum and the majority really only come from a few different forging sources (i.e. CMT, LMT, LAR, MMS). The companies (Colt, Bushmaster, S&W, etc.) receive these forgings and do the machining to make the finished product.

Some companies may have slightly better machining than others, but at this point get what you can and try to avoid the price gougers. Just stay away from the garbage companies that ahelplessnun mentioned, and you will be fine.

I'm no expert... but I have a rock river and a bushy and they both have great fit and finish.. I was on gunbroker last night and it looked like if you waited and watched you could get a stripped lower for $130-180$.. not good, but not so bad you shouldn't just get one and get on with your build.. IMO you should concentrate more on the companies that these guys tell you are bad, and not so much on who is best.. from what I've read and experienced, how happy you are with your lower will depend most on how well you match an upper to it.. I could be wrong(and I'll get corrected if I am) but try to find two that fit tight and have good fit and finish to match.. thats the biggest cheallenge.. the bushy and RRA seem to be pretty easy to find a mate for.. just watch RRA they can be tight.. but thats good in most people's opinion. again no expert here just what I have experienced personally..

Just got a tactical innovations lower and I can't say enough about them.

Excellent fit and finish, "multi" marked, built in retainer spring threaded, and more

So they are all pretty much the same?

Advice is to just get the one that is available and not overly priced?

I have a couple of Tactical Innovations lowers that will be getting built soon.  How much of the detent spring did you have to cut to get the right fit for the take-down pin detent?

im in your same position. from what i can tell they all seem to work the same but you pay for better finish/looks. let me know if you find a good deal.

Has Production caught up with backorders yet and will demand start falling back to allow production to overtake it yet ?

I don't think that it has happened yet, but I hope that it does soon.

I really want to get a new lower without having to pay through the nose on gunbroker.
