Putting a FH on a finished upper.  Using a crush washer and hand tightening the FH on, it is about 15 degrees past being indexed = meaning I need to rotate the FH about 345 degrees to index properly.  Is this normal and will that put too much torque on the upper in the vise blocks (no barrel vise blocks just the upper vise blocks)?  Am I better off going with a peel washer?

What kind of FH? You don't want to over torque it you may have to go with a peel washer to get it to index correctly.

From the Colt Armorers Mtx Manual..........

ETA: I advise against using a receiver vice block to install and index the FH. I recommend barrel vice blocks or come up with a way to secure your barrel in a vice without causing damage to the barrel finish. In these cases, I use ¼” rubber around the barrel, secured in the pipe portion of my bench vice jaws.

ETA II: Secure the barrel in your vice, as close as possible to the FH. Your goal in this, verses securing the upper in a receiver vice block, is to minimize the torque applied to the receiver during FH installation and indexing. Clamping the barrel directly behind the FH eliminates this.

Thanks for advice.

Unfortunately it is on a 10.5" barrel with a 9" rail so nowhere to grip the barrel.  I will try a peel washer so I do not need to put more than 15-20ft/lbs of torque.  Any other suggestions.  Also, I do not have a barrel vise.
