Is it better to secure the upper receiver with an upper receiver vise block and insert or to use the  barrel vise blocks set up when removing the factory A2 FH? I have both tools. I would like to avoid using the barrel vise blocks because they leave aluminum sctratches on the barrel and are a pita to get off.

Thanks

I would use the reciever block . If its strong enough to torqe the barrel its dam sure strong enough to remove a FH.

Barrel vice, as close to the FH as possible. Find some leather or rubber to protect your barrels finish.

I'm not an experienced AR builder, so take my advice accordingly. However, torquing the barrel nut you want to grab the receiver, because you're not putting any stress on the barrel/receiver union, you're putting all the stress on the barrel nut threads.

If you are grabbing the receiver and putting torque on the barrel, you're transmitting force between the barrel and receiver, and that's probably not good for either. I would go with a barrel vise myself.

I grabbed the gas block with some wooden blocks in a vise when I did mine.

Go to an arts and crafts store and buy some small peices of craft leather and line the aluminum clamps with them.  You can fuck up your reciever using it in a block to secure the barrel when changing muzzle devices since the torque is directly transferred to the barrel alignment pin and reciever slot.  when tightening the barrel nut this is not the case.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say...
