I am considering a new build using the Cavalry Arms MKII polymer lower.  I will use a 16" slim profile barel for a KISS rifle and use it as my companion for long walks in the mountains (not primarily as a hunting rifle).

Have any of you used this polymer lower with any success?  I appreciate your insights and experiences.  Anything I should know before I embark on this path?

I have one. It's very reliable. The only difficulty you face is finding one right now. They aren't currently in production.

Look for updates in the Cav Arms forum.

Thanks weptek911.  I got lucky and was able to pick one up from a private party who ordered several lowers some time back and is now just selling one or two at a slight profit.  That's OK because I really wanted to start this project.  I want to have some fun with the build and create a very light handling rifle that I can cart wherever with as little weight as reasonably possible.

That is exactly what I did.  I used a Colt 6520 upper:

The group is at 100 yards with M193, so not the best ammo for accuracy, but good enough in IMO.

Put an ACOG on the carry handle and you will have a lightweight, fast handling, accurate weapon from point blank to 400 yards easy (the farthest I have taken it out so far, where milk jugs were too easy).

Carry handle mount gives the shooter instant access to irons for close in (mine are zeroed standard military zero) and the ACOG for everything else.

You've got the right start for a great lightweight build then !

I used mine with an m16a1 barrel and C7 upper , the triangle hanguards didn't look right so I added a set of OD A2 hanguards to match the lower.

Even with the 20" barrel it's still one of the lightest builds I own.

Easy to build, and makes one nice lightweight package.

Now THAT's what I need to build with my CavAid lower!

This is one of the CavAid lowers.  I made it into one of the lightest 20" AR's I've ever come across.

I built the exact rifle that the OP wants to build for my daughter. 6 pounds of fun!

5 lbs. 2 oz.:

Pretty much trouble free, although I think I can improve the mag drop with a little more trimming in the magwell. They go in just fine, but don't drop free. It uses a CMMG 14.5" pencil barrel.

Great looking carbines here guys!

BTW Sam650. Can you tell we like the Cav15? Not only are they long time friends here, they make a good product too.

They are great.  You have nothing to fear.  Plus, the customer service has been really good in my experience.  Go here:

http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=119299618

This guy, JC Weaponry, sold me a CAV lower for $90 or $95 (off-auction, I called him and made an offer).  It needed some work as it had a lot of plastic flash on it but a little Dremmel work and it was good to go.  These ones he has on GB are PINK but you can paint them with no problem so if you can get a deal on one - go for it.

Thanks for all the response and the great pics.  They give me some really intersting options.

I am pleased to know that the CAV15 ejoys a good reputation in this crowd, cause we all know the folks here at ARFCOM are a pretty fussy bunch.  Thanks so much.

I built one for my friend.  When I first received it I was a not really impressed by the fit and finish (it was a Cav-aid receiver not finished)  by the time I was done assemblying it and smoothing out the rough edges and mounting the upper I didn't want to give it back.  If I didn't already have 4 ARs I would have made it my next gun.  You can't beat their replacement policy either!!

Yes I should.

And maybe someday I will. But I've got enough other projects to finish before I start that one. Heck, I haven't even started that CavAid lower yet.
