Will a 5.56 bcg work with .223 ammo and how do I tell the difference between them.

Yes, no worries.

5.56 and .223 are the same except 5.56 is loaded to a higher pressure.  If you have a 5.56 barrel you are good to go to shoot 5.56 or .223.  If you have a .223 barrel you can only shoot .223 ammo.  If you shoot 5.56 in a .223 barrel you may have problems.

The BCG is the same for both 5.56 and .223.
5.56 ammo is sometimes stamped with the NATO circle/cross.
