I, like many here, am new to these guns and have a question about upper assemblies.
I put a couple of lowers together without any issues that I know of and was suprised at how easy it was. On uppers, are they just as simple? I know absolutely nothing about checking headspace and have read several posts referencing that you have to check and/or set the headspace when putting one together. I was kind of under the assumption that you just grabbed an upper, charging handle, bolt group and barrel and tossed it together. Apparantly I am incorrect. |
| I'm sure it's a good idea to check head space but I have never built an AR yet that had a head space issue using a new bolt and barrel. I'm surte it's possible to be off but not likely. You need specialized tools , not many, but some. Action block, combo wrench, punches. It's not hard to put together. There are stickies in the build section that take you step by step. |

Lowers are a lot easier... I say that just because they barely require any time or many tools. Now personally my Upper was still easy to assemble, it just took signifficantly longer (one mis-step in my assembly order took about 45 min. to work around). The action block isn't required (I built mine without one) but I would bet its very useful/helpful. |

Once I had the proper tools, assembling the upper was pretty straight-forward. The Build It Yourself sticky makes the process "almost" idiot proof. The AR specific tools I bought was a 5" vise, Panther Claw, special roll punches, strap wrench, DPMS multi-tool, and the Brownells jig for tapping out the FSB roll pins. ZM |
