Hey guys, this is my first post here. Forgive me for not knowing all the jargon!

I am in the process of building my first AR. I have been lurking here for awhile but have not seen a thread on my question. Some of the "fancy" guns that I have seen on here have a pistol grip of the forend. Most of the "plain" guns do not. What do you recommend for me with this gun being my first AR. I am a shotgunner looking to get into the AR's. My intent for this gun is some varmint hunting and if needed protection.

VFG's are personal preference. You just have to buy one to try to be able to determine if you like them or not. I love 'em but many do not. I don't see a need for them on a varmit rig if you're going to be shooting from the prone off of a bipod all the time. Any gun can work for protection should the need arise but it would not be my go to protection gun if I had the choice. Each mission dictates the platform.

They're nice for closer range work. A number of them go on and off quickly which allows you to use it traditionally or for CQC.

I went with the LaRue "FUG".  It costs more than other grips - but comes with 3 different  "bottoms" to customise the grip to suit your taste.  Also the LaRue QD locking system is a big plus (IMHO).  So yeah, while there's lots of grips out there that will certainly suit your needs, there is one that can be changed around to make it exactly how you want it.  Going "first class" (in the long run) really is worth it in so many ways - so I gave up a couple 12-packs to get one.
