My friend and I are building carbines.

How is the barrel measured? Off the weapon from one end to the other with the suppressor? Or not counting the suppressor?

He has a old post ban bushmaster barrel that we cut the permanent flash suppressor off of. His barrel is 15" to the end of the threads with the threads being a half an inch. So if he buys a 1.5" suppressor and screws it on, is it legal? Or only if its permanently attached?

Then I am buying a new barrel. If a vendor states its 16", is it 16" plus a suppressor (like 17" over all), or 16" over all?

We ask this of course because we both want the shortest legal length. We appreciate any help.

Barrel has to be 16" overal length.

If it says 16" barrel and has a flash hider on it then it will be about an inch longer.

If it is a 14.5" (or 15 inch; whatever your friends is) then the flash hider has to be permently attached.

If your trying to get the shortest legal barrel than that would probably be a 14.5" with a permently attached FH . But you will only save a half an inch to inch which really isnt that big of a deal when it comes down to it.

barrel length is measured with the barrel in the weapon with the bolt closed.  Measure from the face of the bolt to the end of the threads if it has a removable flash hider.  IF the measurement is below 16 inches you have an unregistered NFA weapon.  IF you measure and have a measurement of over 16 inches then you have no worries.

Places that sell a 16 inch barrel with a removable flash hider will be 16 plus inches to the end of the threads/crown of the muzzle.
