I was at a local gunshow and one of the vendors told me that most components are made in one location and then actually stamped(?) with a manufacturer's name.  The example that he gave was the Rock River and Double Star lowers are actually made by the same place.

Anyone know the validity of that?  I don't necessarily find it hard to believe since the same thing goes on in the electronics industry but I was just curious.

That's slightly correct, but very incomplete and insinuates that this vendor's wares are all the same.  They ain't.

There ARE a relatively small number of aluminum forge firms around, and AR parts tend to come from that few sources.  These are people like Alcoa, Cerro, etc., in other words, VERY well known and reliable companies.

Once the forging is completed, it goes to the company that will mill it, whether it's a job-lot mill or an in-house mill.  It's true that Rock River's receivers aren't milled in house, but they are milled to Rock River specs, not Double Star's, while DS receivers are milled to their specs and nobody else's.  This is why Rock River receivers have the reputation of being AWFULLY tight when compared to others; RRA has 'em milled that way.  Double Star does their own thing with their receivers, so they are unique to that brand.

So even if only a few companies are forging blanks, and only a few companies do the actual milling of those forgings, even if the forgings come from the same place and are milled in the same mill, Rock River receivers are NOT identical to DS receivers.

"Good tight", not too tight.  As in the first few times you separate the receivers at the takedown lug, you wonder real hard whether you'll ever get 'em back together again.  The vendor I bought my first one from demonstrated how tight they are by using a good gun grease and a mallet to tap the upper down onto the lower.  After a few cycles, it isn't as tight and when it's "broken in" it all fits together absolutely perfect.  I can't imaging needing an Accuwedge or anything like it with a RRA rifle.
