| and although I've read seemingly thousands of threads on this site regarding different setups, I thought I had figured out what I wanted (BCM 16" mid-length upper). But, now that I've been reading up on barrel twist ratios I am second guessing my decision. I already have my lower (DPMS) and I've already assembled it. I think I'm going with the Magpul CTR military spec stock, but I'm holding off on ordering my stock until I decide what upper I want so I can order them both at the same time. I know I want a 16" AR and I will mostly be shooting at paper. I would however like to hunt some predators (AKA varmints) too though. I also know I want a flat top receiver and eventually a free floating rail system and some sort of optic, but I'm not exactly sure on the optic yet. I like both the LMT 16" M4 and the BCM 16" middy, but should I scrap that idea and go with a Stag 1:9 upper (or something similar) instead of the 1:7. I know you guys have to get tired of this debate, I just want to build something that I am going to enjoy shooting as much as I've enjoyed reading about everyone else's builds. |
| Building your first AR is a lot like your first sexual experience. There is a lot leading up to it and before you know it, it's over. Nice thing about the AR platform is hardly nothing is set in stone and the way the bolt interfaces with the chamber more often than not you get good accuracy. The question about barrel twist rates has more to do with the type of bullets you are going to shoot than anything else. Decide if you want a "heavy" bullet or a standard and then you will know what barrel twist you need. |
Thanks for the reply, I was reading about varmint rounds and that is what initially led me to question my initial decision. I read that a 1:7 would be too much spin for most varmint rounds. |
Then it makes since to go with the 1:7, right? I'm going to read up more on varmint rounds to determine whats out there for the faster spin of the 1:7. |
