I was in the AR regular discussion forum and I found out that I do not own a real COLT SP1 as some posters pointed out I own a mix gun that consists of a SP1 upper and lower but more than likely an OLY barrel.  So I thought to myself since it is not a collectable maybe I can change the upper out to make it a flat top and take off the regular hand guards and add some rails, EOTCH, and Sure Fire.

So my question is this; can all these things be done and if so what do I have to be aware of or watch out for if I attempt these modifications myself?

To top it off my big question is this; currently the weapon is very accurate so if I can change out the upper is it as simple as screwing my barrel out of one upper and into the new one, and will this mess up the accuracy.  Sorry for all the new guy questions I have never done a build and it interests me greatly so I would love to learn.

Thanks
Brandon

Take a look at the top, tacked thread titled: Assembling your own, LOWER, UPPER....

This would be a good starting point for you to read-up on what is involved with barrel removal-replacement.

ETA: If your into the old “Retro” AR’s you might want to visit our “Retro Forum” and hold off for the time being with your plans.

how long is your barrel?  keep it mind that if you dont have the license/permit than your barrel has to stay 16".  If your barrel is less than 16" and your FH is pinned and welded you would have to take that off to change to a FF.  THen pin and welded it back on which could be  a pain.  Its hard for me to tell where your barrel ends and your FH starts.  Maybe I need a better computer screen.

someone correct me on this if i am wrong.

There are FF HG’s out there that do not require the removal of the FH and FSB for installation.
