Hello,

I have an unfired 16" post-ban upper with a silver soldered muzzle brake. I want to replace the brake with an A2 FH.

What is the best way to remove it?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Are you sure it's silver soldered and not pinned? Look for a discolored hole on the brake this will tell you if it's pinned or not. If it is soldered use a propane torch to heat the brake and threads until the solder melts and turn it off.

If it's properly silver soldered propane likely won't get hot enough. Use MAPP and a turbohead.

P08 and bushflyr,

it is definitely soldered. you can see a silver ring around the rear of the brake where it touches the barrel. i can't see any indication that it is pinned as there are no marks around the back edge of it, no grind indications or anything like that.

i'll try the mapp gas.

what can be used as a heat sink so the barrel doesn't get too hot?

Thanks for your help.

There is a heat stop paste you can use.  Apply it around the barrel and you would be good.
