This is so basic I am almost too embarrassed to ask:
Just received mid-length upper, and am unable to pull delta ring back far enough to install plastic handguards into place.  Any advice as to a method that works other than with tool or buddy system?  Thanks.

Use a long piece of cord. Tie it around the DR with a long piece coming off of each side. Make a loop in those pieces or clamp them in a vise. Push/pull the gun forward with one hand and remove/install with the other.

I've always used a Flat blade screwdriver for a bit of extra leverage.

Real men use their hands

I recently got a brand new midlength upper and I wanted to see the barrel markings so I took my handguards off. It was sorta difficult to get them back on since I had never done it before. I just pressed the stock against the counter and pulled the ring back with my left hand while feeding the front part of the handguards into the slot then then attaching them to the delta ring last.

If youre gonna be doing this a lot just buy a handguard removal tool or make your own.  Makes life easier.  If you won't be doing it often just grab a buddy and have him hold the ring down while you put on the handguards.

Yup, buddy or a handguard removal tool.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I ordered the type of tool suggested, and in the meantime, got help from a buddy to install the handguards.  My thanks again.
