| Stupid noob question but can locktite hold the castle nut well? Should I stake anyway and combine the both? |
| The bigger concern is the entire buffer tube turning in the receiver (tearing up the threads in the process). I actually put blue loctite on the buffer tuber threads before screwing it into the receiver, then more blue loctite on the castle nut. After this, I stake the nut too. Belt and suspenders, maybe, but my stocks hold firm. |

You only need to stake it if you plan on shooting it. Use loctite and stake it, or just stake it. Buffer tubes will shoot loose. Loctite alone is probably good enough; however, they were designed to be staked, so why not? I had one of my build's castle nut shoot loose at around 3,000 rounds. Now, I stake the heck out of my buffer tubes and I stake my own carrier keys. It is a lot of piece of mind for just a few taps of a punch and hammer. |

I used just a drop of blue loctitie on the threads before tightening the castle nut, and later had to disassemble it to install a single point sling mount on an end plate. I have the proper stock nut wrench and a lower receiver vise fixture, but I couldn't get it apart without destroying the buffer tube threads. I've removed the nut from staked only assemblies and you can overcome the stake without destroying any parts. You can then file the burr and re-use the nut or replace it when you re-assemble. I go for staking only now. |
Thats why I only stake and not apply loctite. Alittle heat would of probably fixed your problem but it just makes it a hassle. |
This is the way I have it and check and re tighten every time I clean it to the point that my crescent wrench is getting a bit bent. It never really worked loose yet, but reading up in here and I feel that I should have asked. It's not like this thing will see military type duty, just the funnest damn thing I've had since motorcycles! So it does get used and a bit banged up when camping and stuff. The other point mentioned is the single point sling adapter. Seems like I should wait to stake it until after I get the sling. Thanks guys! |
