I've been craving another build and decided to go with a 1/7 dissipator barrel. Previous builds have been vanilla rifle lengths with optics. I like the full sight length radius and now I'm wanting a shorter rifle. I'd prefer fluted HBAR 1/7 chrome lined. The barrel profiles are either HBAR or M4 and I'm wondering about the balance of the rifle from those with experience or opinions. I may go with a sopmod stock though at the present I'm leaning toward the shorter A1 and will likely go with an Aimpoint optic. Rifle length handguards. Weight is a factor with this build, but not so important as balance. I want it to feel "handy" if you know what I mean. So I'm looking for options and suggestions. |

Check out the lightweight midlength barrels from CMMG. They are available in a dissapator setup too/ cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cat=75 Med-con or hbar is going to be very nose heavy. Ask me how I know. BSW |
+1 I've been very happy w/my M10M barrel. It's my favorite setup by far. I would much rather have the midlength gas than the carbine. |

Thanks for link, I checked 'em out. I take the hint on the barrel being nose heavy So what about the gas system? Full length or mid length? Is there that much of difference in port pressures opposed to the carbine or is that even a consideration? Seems like it would be to some degree but I'm unsure about that one The Bushmaster barrels are mid length and CMMG has the full length system available. I guess I need to read up on the differnt gas systems and figure out what works best with what. The reason for all the questions is I'm a big believer in P6... (prior planning prevents piss poor performance) |

I use a mid-length from CMMG. The mid-length gas system has a lower port pressure than carbine, but still has enough barrel past the gas port that function isn't impaired. I shoot bullet weights from 55gr to 75gr and the rifle just keeps chugging along. Compared to the carbine gas system the midlength has a smoother recoil and less harsh extraction. I actually started with med-con barrel and did some matches with that. The 4 day rifle class was killer and made me decide to get it reprofiled. My smith turned it down to an A1 profile, which balances very nicely with the fixed A1 stock I use. BSW |

I got a 16" del-ton upper with 1/7 chrome lined barrel, flat top, Magpul PRS stock. I shaved the FSB down to be low profile, put another FSB at the front and slapped rifle length guards on it to make it dissipator-style. Total weight after assembly is about 8lbs - just used my bath scale, so I know it's not precise. ETA: Balance point is at the center of the magwell when no mag inserted. Barrel is M4 profile, carbine length gas system, with Phantom flash hider |
Bushmaster Dissipator barrels are carbine length, not mid-length. |
That's what I mean too, the gas system is carbine length, not mid-length. Their website did not say that (that I seen), but the 2008 catalog I have says it. Quoted from the catalog: "A 16" Chrome Lined Barrel with carbine position gas block...." ETA: I am working on building me a Dissipator style rifle & would love to have a mid-length gas system made by BM,but since they do not make them I may just settle for the carbine length. I realize that CMMG makes what I want, but their barrels a too expensive IMO. |

I thought about that but I like the full length sight radius. That, and I like the looks of the dissipator style. NC is not very NFA friendly or I'd go that route with a 14.5 barrel. The required permanent muzzle device is a deal killer though, at least so far. I need to give some more thought as to what the end product is going to be, and look through the picture thread. I appreciate the help and the suggestions, thanks. |
