so my front sight base is canted i believe slightly to the right. now i have the rear sight moved to the left of zero approx 15-18 clicks. not having any short stroking or jamming issues. the barrel was torqued to 76 lbs using the dpms claw. should i bang the sight till i get direct zero or closer with a rubber mallet. or try to file the index pin area. or should i say the hell with it and leave it.

I use a couple procedures when installing barrels:

First, I use a second set of hands when tightening the barrel nut. Someone to hold pressure on the front sight base in the opposite direction.

Second, I draw a vertical line on a piece of paper using a black sharpie. I place this on the wall across from my bench vise using a level to ensure it is straight.

Looking down the bore, I place this line directly in the center of the barrel, and looking up, I turn the barrel to line up the front sight post with the reference line. When the upper receiver, barrel and front sight post are all in line with each other, I tighten the barrel nut.

I then verify that during the barrel nut tightening everything stayed aligned. If not, I repeat the process.

looks as if barrel extension was put on in a fashion that the fsb is canted to the right. sending it back to del-ton.

I would pull it a part and get a new index pin. Or put the upper in a vice with a block and then hang a rag over the sight stick a armrs tool in the sight and with a slght push move the sight in the dirc you wish.

not that easy... barrel extension is installed first and sets your headspace...

then the gas port is drilled and FSB installed... if the FSB is drilled canted to the barrel there is no easy fix...

if the whole barrel is canted (as QUIB said) it is much easier to correct...

A quick snapshot would really help in visualizing that. Sounds top notch!

Direct from the old M16A1 -23&P....................

A diagram from the M16A2 -23&P which shows alignment of the barrel, FSP and rear sight using the vertical line method.
