New builder here, searched and didn't find answer. From what I'm understanding, It's safe to use .223 in a 5.56 chambered gun, but not vice versa. Is this correct?

Ripper, your brevity is outstanding!

The .223 is a lower-powered round than the 5.56. A 5.56 in a gun made for .223 could possibly cause a destructive disassembly of the gun, rendering it unusable, and possibly injuring the shooter.
