Is it absolutely necessary to have barrel clamp vise blocks to install a flash hider or will an action block be good enough?

I've done it with an action block, but you're much better off using a barrel vise. Otherwise, you're twisting the whole bbl/receiver assembly. You can (I have) rotate the barrel when just using an action block, throwing off the front sight post position.

Thank you for your reply. What did you do to correct your problem?

Mine came off easily w/o a block... I think I was one of the lucky ones though.

I did mine with the upper receiver block. The pin should fit the upper tight enough to not allow movement, but there is no guarantee.

If you have a vice with jaws that accept pipe sections, you can wrap your barrel with a piece of rubber and use your standard bench vice to do FH work.

I have used thick(~1/8") leather before without problems in a regular vice.
