Hey guys, I finally decided to buy my first AR and I’ve been spending way too many hours over the past few weeks trying to decide what I want, so I came here to see if I could get some opinions on what I’ve come up with. First off, I’m a college student with a fairly limited budget, and I just bought a hunting rifle, and I don’t need a tack driver or anything. I just want a gun that I can practice shooting with and just have fun building and sending some rounds downrange. Heres what I’ve come up with so far: Mega Machine Gator Stripped lower - $120 Stag LPK - $63 Upper Assembly: RRA Mid-length with a 16” 1:9 chrome moly barrel -$455Link I don’t think that I have the tools to build one up from parts, so I decided to go with a fully assembled upper. Tactical CAR Buttstock Kit, Black, Six Position Collapsible - $75 So do you guys think that these pieces are good enough for what i want? or also do you think i should just suck it up and build the upper myself? any input is greatly appreciated. thanks. |

thats a good start. if you arent in a hurry i would watch the EE their is always deals popping up in there that can save you some dough. if it were me i would go for as much quality used parts i could find just for putting rounds downrange. essential arms lowers are 88 dollars last time i looked del ton has a A3 flatop upper for 395 plus shipping good lpk can be had for 55 dollars you can find complete 6 position stocks for 45 to 50 on the EE total 588 for complete rifle, verses 713. with the money saved you could get a buis. |

Sounds like a good project. If it were me (and I don't want to open a can of worms here with this comment), I would spend the extra dough on the chrome lined barrel. Is it absolutely necessary? Nah. But it will be easier to clean and you'll have easier extraction, wich will save wear on your extractor and whatnot. Plus, your overall barrel life will be extended. But again, if you'd rather save the money, the chrome-moly barrel will suit you just fine and last through several thousand rounds (5000+). Other than that, your list is good to go. I just installed a Stag LPK on my AA lower, it was a pretty nice kit. For what it's worth, I just saw a RRA mid length chrome-moly 1:9 16" upper, sans BCG, for $360 on the EE. Seems a little high for a used upper with no BCG, but it would be worth looking into I think. |

Give a look at the link below... I just bought a Stag Upper from them and could not be happier... It is Legal Transfers and Pete is really good at responding to your emails and his turn around time is only two weeks... http://ar15sa.fatcow.com/store/page2.html Good Shooting... |

I think you are making a good choice on the midlength. Keep in mind there is going to be a heavy backlog on RRA complete upper halves- especially chromed. Mine took 12 weeks. Armalite will run sales from time to time with similarly priced middy uppers, and you can find CMMG middies on the EE occasionally for under $500. ETA: I am also a college student who finished a similar build that came in at ~$650 RRA midlength upper half, chrome lined $445 DPMS lower and LPK $150 6 pos from Armalite $66 Was given a carry handle. |
| Hey, Thanks so much for the help. i think that i might just save even more money and get the 16'' midlength del-ton kit and used the saved money on tools so i can build up more rifles in the future. speaking of which, anybody know where to find a list of the tools i'm going to need? |
