I would like to surprise my son and purchase a lower and then help him build a .223.
I know nothing about which lower to purchase and I only want to take on the project if we can build one at a nice savings over a factory rifle. I read the how to guide but what would it cost to build one and which lower would you recommend I start with? Price? Where to order?
Thank you

First let me say your a kick ass dad, let me know if you need another son. As far as lowers go, they are all pretty much the same. Some are finished a little nicer then others but any quality lower will work(Vulcan, hesse blackthorn = crap). Mega, Noveske, Anvil Arms, Spikes, Stag , Superior , RRA and dpms are just a few that have good feedback.

I personaly have some superior arms and anvil arms lowers. Since this is for your son why not make it that more special and get a Anvil Arms of Spikes tactical lower and get it engraved with something.

As far as cost, it will roughly end up around the same except you will be able to choose your parts for the build instead of just getting what the manufacture gives you.

Besides building the AR will give you some quality one on one time with your son and give him some sense of accomplishment and how the internals work as well. This way he/you know how it went together if something breaks or goes wrong you can fix it.

Hope this helps in a way, maybe give you something to start with.

Where is a good source to purchase a lower and approximately what do they sell for?
Thank you

Heres a few links to good companys that will take care of you and not screw you over. Average price for a striped lower is around $100+/- or so depending on which one you want. I picked up my Anvil Arms lowers for $115 with two engravings and I could'nt be happier.

Anvil Arms
Del-ton
Spikes
rbprecision
Rainier Arms

Pretty much any of the forum sponsers are good to go and will take care of you. Just start clicking ad links and searching around. The lower will have to be transfered to your FFL and you will most likely have to pay a transfer fee. I pay $20 for mine to be transfered.

Thanks.
I have a great dealer who only charges $10 to transfer.
I was looking thru the Brownells catalog and they sell a Superior Arms lower for $96, Fulton Arms for $133 or a DPMS for $110.

Any reason to pick one above the other?

You could also try gunbroker.com.  I just purchased a RRA lower receiver from a dealer there.

If I were to choose between those 3 lowers I would pick the Superior Arms lower, but thats because I already have 2 of them and I like them. They have a set screw that you can tighten to take out some slack in the stock trigger pull as well so its not so long.

Honestly I would really look at spikes or anvil arms for a lower, there nice and clean with a great finish. Also they are both on sale right now, Anvil Arms is a little backed up and will be a few week wait but Spikes has his lowers in stock and ready to go. Both have some killer engravings as well.

ETA: Heres a Anvil Arms lower that Jon engraved for me, this is going on my brothers build that I am doing for him as a gift. The lower with one engraving was $100 and the second engraving cost me another $15.

Thanks for the advice.
I managed to make a good deal on ordering three of the Stag Arms lowers. Shipping was only $10 for all three which is a help for us Alaskan's!

Still waiting to hear back from Anvil for a shipping quote as I might put a couple more in the safe "just in case".

Nice catch on the Stag's, $10 shipping definitly helps when your up there in Alaska. My cost for the 3 lowers to be shiped was about $15 total.
