I'm new to the AR-15 world, and I wanted build my first one before my 18th birthday. I just want something that's pretty basic, and something different to target shoot in the back yard. Money is kinda tight *only being 17* but I would like to keep it all under $800 and cheaper if possible, I just want all US made parts that will last.

I know I want a right handed lower with a forward assist, where should I start?? What kind of set up do you recommend, and roughly how much would it cost? And I am open to ANY tips from ANYONE, hey

below is a pic that I would like the finished product to look like, small details and color doesn't make a difference.

THANKS!!!

That rifle in the picture is a good choice.  You'd be happy with it, I'm sure.  You said you want to "build" one.  That would mean buying the extra tools, receiver block, etc. and that would up the cost.

I'm guessing you probably meant you want to buy an inexpensive lower and then slap on a decent upper.  I'd buy a Model 1 or similar kit for the upper.  I don't know who has a deal on lowers right now.

If I were you, I'd be sure to get a flat top upper.  You can put a removable carry handle on it if you want too.  Someday, you'll want some sort of optic and then you wont have to change out the upper.

You can do a lot with basic tools and borrow the others from people who have them.
Some people are kind enough to torque on the barrel and time an A2 flash suppressor if you ask.

If money is tight, just buy a $570 CMMG Bargain Bin rifle, and use the rest of your bucks on upgrades and ammo.  Then take it out and shoot it.  If you have a hankering to build one, then build the next one.

Welcome!!!!

A lower is easy to assemble with few or no specialty tools needed.

The upper requires more specialty tools.

Most of the lower can be done with a block that sits in the mag well and allows you to put the gun in vise and a decent set of punches and allen wrench. The other tools can be improvised.
The upper is better done with a few specialty tools imo.
I did my second AR as a build and this site is a great resource.

The pic looks like Bushmasters Patrol Carbine.........
