I picked up a Rock River 16" M4 profile 5.56 barrel with a 1:7 twist and when I put the A2 Flash Suppressor on it brought the length up to 17 inches.

With 16" being legal and could I have the barrel shortened with the A2 Flash Suppressor permanently attached to give the over all length of 16" and still be legal?

If my barrel was just a little shorter I could put a bayonet on my AR15.

Scot

PS, I really don't want to have to pay the $200 for an SBR tax stamp.

yes you can shorten it.  If the muzzle device is permanently attached, it is included as part of the barrel length.  If you get an A2 permanently attached, your barrel should be 14.7".  The permanently attached FH will bring you over 16".

Don't.  It's a pain in the ass.

Could you explain further?

I saw somewhere that you could have it shortened and rethreaded for $50.

He probably means that your options are limited if you want to change your configuration later (handguards, front sight block).

I plan on getting the Midwest Ind free float rail and I am leaving my front sight as is.
I just want to be able to attach a bayonet.

Scot

Here she is so far.

You can't pull the barrel without a lot of work.  The little extra length isn't that bad.

That's what she said.

You won't be able to install a free float tube if you have your flash hider perm attached, unless you had the barrel extension removed and replaced everything from that end.  Normally, you remove the flash hider, unpin the FSB and slide everything off the front.  If your FH is perm attached you can't get the FSB over it, so everything would have to come off the chamber end.  It would be a royal pain in the ass.

Stickman did a tutorial on installing the Midwest Industires Free Float Quad Rail.

It doesn't require the removal of the barrel nut or the gas block.

It's not that you cannot install a free-float handguard, it's that your choices in handguards become much more limited.  Troy, MI, KAC, Vltor and ARMS make free-float units that can be installed.  These are generally good quality but they tend to be more bulky and/or heavier than other designs that require removing the FSB to install.

Instead of cutting down the barrel, just get a clamp on bayonet adapter:

Bayonet adapter

That way you won't be losing barrel length, which means velocity, for something with marginal usefulness.

I could understand getting one of those if I didn't have a lug already.

Could someone post a photo of a 16" M4 profile barrel with an A2 flash suppressor and a Bayonet attached.

How far behind the flash suppressor does the bayonet touch the barrel?

It sits a little over an inch behind the flash hider.

I'm not slamming your idea, it's just permanetly fixing a FH, then if you need to get to the gas block, dremeling it off isn't worth that inch anymore.

If you do decide to cut the barrel down, you'll most likely need a washer package from surefire or KAC to get the FH or Comp to line up correctly, seems most do.

Just out of prospective.  My M4-Gery, is almost identical to my issued M4A1, with the exception of 'auto'.  I've done MANY weapons packages both with my issued and my personal... I've never noticed that it was 1" longer, till I laid my M4A1 on top of my RRA, after reading here that M4 barrels were 16" inculdeing the comp, and most civilian M4's were 16" w/o the comp.

I've never attached a bayonet onto a 16" barrled gun... that's why you always have a pistol and a "kabar/MRE opener".  Till today.

Personally if I'm going to have a barrel cut... I'd want to give the ATF $200 first and just go down to 11-1/2 or 12" with it.

pictures for anyone wondering, I scratched the barrel and didn't have the flash on, that's why they're not mounted... this is the second set of pics I took.
