How hard/easy is it to reinstall a new barrel extension? I have been given an offer on some surplus barrels that have been completely stripped. I have never installed a barrel extension, but am willing to for the price of these barrels.

Getting a new extension to time at top dead center is going to be tough, You also need a special tool to tighten the extension. you would probably be better off getting a barrel with the extension already on.

Things I know you will need...

AR-15 Barrel Extension Wrench (Del-Ton)~$54-$59

Barrel Extension () ~$20

All three .223/5.56mm headspace gauges. (Del-Ton)

I know I'm missing several things, such as the correct size barrel vice jaws. Take a look at this thread. Also look at the 5.45 barrel thread, as there were a few members who converted AK-74 barrels to work with ARs.

No, take a pass on those barrels.  You'll never get it indexed without a lot of machine work.  It is not worth the effort.

The barrels are stripped?  Then they are junk.

Did you know that the extension is installed BEFORE the index pin is drilled and installed, and BEFORE the gas port is drilled and BEFORE the front sight base is installed?  That is because they all must index zero with the extension.

The guy above left off of his needed tools a lathe and lots of machinist time for in excess of the cost of just buying new barrels.

I knew I left some things off. Thanks for correcting me.
