I was wondering if you can use either mil-spec or commercial buffer tubes on any receiver.  I wanna switch my Stag from a mil, to commercial, is it possible?

and if it is, why do they have the different sizes?

I have NO idea!

Keep in mind you will have to use the correct stock for the tube.

Yes you can use which ever one you want. basicly the Mil-spec tube ia a little thicker so you must make sure the stock you want to use is for either the Mil-spec or the commercial.

Yes you can use either buffer tube on any lower receiver. The mil-spec tubes are forged while the commerical version is made cheaper and not forged to save money. And because of the different manufacture process there are different tolerances.

so is the quality bad?  and i cant even find a commercial one to buy(help?)

i have a commercial CTR stock that was given to me as a gift, and not returnable to the store, but i have a mil spec buffer tube.  I have the stock on my rifle right now, but it moves with the friction lock on... its really annoying.

so any help would be nice

Different manufacturing processes.

The mil version has the thread raised above the body -- the "valley bottom" on the thread is at the same level as the outer diameter of the tube body.

The commercial variety has the thread cut into the tube, so the "peaks" of the thread are level with the outer surface of the tube body.

Obviously, its cheaper to cut a thread into a piece of tube than it is to manufacture a tube with a thicker section at the end into which to cut the threads.

Why the mil version is done that way -- I have no idea.
