Has any body installed this without those pliers or should I just buy one?

Snap ring pliers are pretty cheap, and do make quick work of installation, but they are not necessary. I’ve used needle nose pliers to spread open the ring just enough to snap it over the barrel nut.

I bought my snap ring pliers for less than $10 at Sears. A little bit of money to save a lot of headaches or screwing something up.

I had both internal and external snap ring plies all ready when I did my builds.

Years ago on active duty, I used a screwdriver. Put one end of the snap ring in the grove and walk the screwdriver around forcing the ring into the groove.
Note, we weren't real worried about messing up the finish. You should be!
