hey yall,
new to the site, this will be my first post. Ive been a gun owner/lover for quite some time and I have decided to build my first AR. Id like to build it from scratch and I'm wondering what it will cost me on average. Lets say I go middle of the road with all the pieces. What price am I look at overall? Is it cost effective to build your own?  I just want an idea of the kind of money I need to set aside for this project. thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it.

Hey welcome to the site!
There are alot of options and many ways to go about this.
You can build from pieces or you can get a kit.
I build from pieces but that is because I want specific pieces and have a very specific purpose for my rifles.
For yourself I would recomend a kit. it includes a completed upper, stock and all the parts to assemble a lower. You just go to a gunshow or order a lower online (online requires a FFL transfer where a gunshow does not), assemble the lower with the parts included in the kit and then have fun!

My recomendations for a kit would be Del-ton.com
http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Rifle_Kits_16_s/57.htm

With one of those kits and a lower you can get one for around 600-650!

thanks for the link. So if i got that kit I would just buy a stripped lower, use the parts from the kit to complete the lower, and Id be finished?
Another question. Is it cheaper to buy a complete upper and a complete lower seperately or to just buy a new complete rifle? thanks for your patience guys. Im sure in a few months ill look back at these posts and laugh like i did on my old 10/22 mod questions.

just finished mine, saw the gun i wanted at gander mountain for $1000.00 but didnt have the stock and trigger guard and barrel i wanted exactly. So i decided to build. I built one exactly the way i wanted that is alot nicer than the one at gander mountain for $800 bucks. I was very satisfied. It took me nearly 3 months to build thanks to RRA on my upper. Plus theres no tax! Hope this helps.

Rock River Arms...a good manufacturer.

Look at buying the "complete upper" (you don't need all the tools and it's a litter cheaper) and then buying a stripped lower and all the other parts and building this way.

thanks for all the help guys, this site has been really helpful. While I have your ears, what is the preban/postban thing? what does it entail and is it nationwide? If its too long to explain, a link would be awesome. Thanks again
