Hello guys; new here! I've been wanting to obtain an "evil black rifle" for a little while now, and now I'm sort of in the "investigative" stage of making this happen. I have a little range time with a friend's AR, but I'm very much an acolyte regarding these rifles. Despite this, I've tentatively decided that I'd like to attempt to build (assemble) one as it seems like there is a bit of a price advantage, and I'd like to build one exactly how I'd like it. I also think the experience would be fun and give me a better idea of the ins and outs of these rifles. My price limit is probably in the $800 region, but I may go a little higher if the itch for perfection becomes more insatiable.h Personally, I think the M16A4 is just about the sexiest modern rifle out there, and that's the direction I think I'd like to go. I have noticed most here seem to like the carbine-type ARs, but I think I'd rather go with the full-length rifle. Now, I'd like to know what it would take to make a rifle that was as close to a military-spec M16A4 as possible. I may take a few deviations based on personal preferences as the build goes along, but by and large I'm looking to build a M16A4gery. I know you guys get newbie questions like this all the time, but I'd really appreciate any guidance any of you can provide. |

Select the lower reciever of your choice and have it transfered to your FFL . $100 + $25 Then call these guys.$510 plus $15 shipping. $640 with change to spare for mags, sling, ammo etc. Their are many other ways you could go but my way is the best |

I'm going in willingly! I'm doubting I'll regret it, though I suspect my wallet will (especially after seeing how much an ACOG goes for!)...hanks Let me type "out loud" with a few of my thoughts. I've read some of the FAQs, but I'm still not 100% on all the terminology. In other words, try not to laugh too hard at my newbish meanderings...hrome-linedFixed stock Upper (of some sort); flat-top obviously Lower (of some sort) Knight's RAS (this is what the USMC uses, right?) Perhaps a two-stage trigger Who makes the best bolt carrier? Who makes the best bolt? I'd like to get components that are MP tested. Bolt components and barrel see the most wear so I wouldn't mind spending a little extra for quality beyond milspec. I'd like to get an optical sight, but may put that off for a while and stick with the detachable handle and iron sights. Eotech's red dot sight is a little pricey and the Trijicon ACOG is through the roof, as far as I'm concerned. |

I'm a fan of Bushmaster products, mostly because of their quality, catalog/website is easy to shop from, they have fast service, and they ship to my fpo. BUSMASTER UPPER'S Bushmaster is just one of the many companies that sell a quality product. (they are also a site sponsor) Who ever you decide to buy from, try to make it one of the sponsor's of this site. (see the tabs at the top of the page). Gene ETA: for a lower, you might look at ANVIL Arms (also a site sponsor). I put together one of his lowers a few weeks ago, and I really liked the fit and finish, plus he offers free laser engraving on your lower. |

Thanks! That looks pretty good, but I was perusing the sponsors here and ran across this upper: CMMG 20” Gov't Profile Upper http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/?shop=1&cart=915542&cat=27& I have a few questions. What is meant by the "T" and "F" markings mentioned in the description? Some of the options are a little overwhelming, so I would appreciate any clarifications regarding what some of that stuff actually means. Is a forged sight base a good thing? Would I be better off buying this upper without the bolt and carrier group and buying the group from another source? I keep hearing that Colt and Armalite bolts are good. As I've said, my end goal is to create an AR that's a pretty close facsimile of the M16A4 and would like to know what it would take to do that. There are so many options out there that I have a hard time discerning what would be correct for an M16A4 clone and what wouldn't. |
The T markings are for the upper receiver's rail slots. They are numbered, every other slot. This is to help to locate optics or other devices if removed/replaced. The F marked front sight base is for a flat-top rifle. If you put a carry handle or other iron sight on the upper's rail, you will want the F-marked base to get correct sight geometry. Not all makes have this feature because standard front sight bases are plentiful. ETA: CMMG is probably the closest you'll find to the real thing, they get the specs right. |
Looks like your on the right track. Take the time to make what you want. Great thing about AR's is even if you change your mind on the final config., your not out a buttload of money as most parts can be used for various set-ups. I'd say the main thing to get nailed down is the barrel length/style as this section is a few bones. After that, swap and switch to your hearts/wallets desire.
