| im looking to buy a 24in upper from dpms off of midwayusa. the upper doesnt come with a forward assist or dust cover/brass deflector. are these things i can live without or should i look for a diff upper |
That is different from what I was thinking. This upper is intended to be used without a dust cover door, and there is no provision for a forward assist. I have to question adding a red dot scope to a varmint type upper.  Unless you are a slither-through-the-mud tactical type, buy it if this is otherwise what you are looking for. |
Acutally you don't have to pull the barrel to put the ejection port cover on. Pull the snap ring, slide the rod back far enough to clear the hole, tension the spring onto the door, work the rod back into place and put the snapring back on. It's a lot easier to do than to explain. |

The dust cover and the forward assist are not necessary. Whether you want the FA and the port cover just depends on your personal preference. I am building a varmint rifle with a similar upper and I dont want the FA and the ejection port cover. The forward assist is generally not necessary, and in fact you can get a a bad round stuck very tightly if you ever whack the FA; unless you are in combat, dont use the FA. These are my personal opinions FWIW. G |

Here's one more opinion. The forward assist in a varm rifle or other precision type is probably never going to be used. I consider it only a 50/50 solution. Half the time it works and half the time it frustrates you that it doesn't lock everything up so you can shoot. Clint Smith wrote about FA in Cops Magazine (I think) and he favored reaching around the mag well with the left hand and sliding the bolt carrier forward with the fingertips. If it's going to close that should be enough force. As for the ejection port cover I would recommend having on. Yes, it keeps junk out of the upper. But in a less tac cool reason it it keeps the inside of your rifle cases cleaner, especially if you run your gun well lubed. |
