Hello. Sorry if this is a noob question as this will be my first build. I want to make a straight pull action AR in 30-06 using this upper: http://www.americanspiritarms.net/store.php?crn=209&rn=397&action=show_detail As crazy as it may seem, I like the idea of extra accuracy and staying legal in my state (CA). Do they make 30-06 barrels and bolts that I can throw on to this upper? I want a barrel with no gas port. Also can I use any old AR-10 lower? Thanks! |

.30 Springfield is too long for the .308 length magwell of the AR10 style lower. Perhaps you could use a non chromelined .308 barrel that is then reamed to match the 63mm case. It would be a single shot though, feeding rounds manually into the chamber. I've wondered about the feasibility of a side feeding upper that could accept BAR magazine for a .30Springfield AR. |

A few of the guys at cncguns.com were talking about this not too long ago. As stated, you'd have to scale everything up a bit, such as a bigger upper and lower, design a bigger bolt carrier group, get a barrel maker to chamber an AR barrel in 30-06, etc...With today's cnc machining capabilities, it can certainly be done and I think would make some starving machinist a nice bundle of money. Personally, I'd love one and would buy one today. It's been awhile since we've talked about it. Here's the link... www.cncguns.com/forum/index.php?topic=273.0 ETA: you have to register to visit the forums, but it's free and is certainly worth it. |
Seems to me like a lot of work (or expense, depending whether you were building or buying it) for the difference in ballistics. |

There is one already. I saw it a while back in a magazine-this fall. The magwell was removable and used BAR mags. ETA- Found it. Cobb makes it. It's called the Cobb Multi-caliber 300.
Review of Cobb MC series Cobb link Cost: $2135.... and all I see online is "out of stock" More on Cobb MC series 100-400 Security Arms link above.... nice pics and reviews.
If you look at the pics, the uppers are NOT interchangeable w/ the standard mil-spec AR. Take note of the mounting on the back edge where the back of upper mates w/ lower before buffer tube..... I still want one, despite the cost of over 2K..... |
| 30-06 vs 308 is not much of a difference. I have used both calibers for hunting and would consider the 30-06 simply because it is what everyone in my hunting party uses. Simple fact is however the 308 is plenty for nearly all your needs and I could not imagine such a build being at all much of a gain. Having said that you can get .50 cal single shot AR uppers and maybe even make a mile shot so I'm sure you could do something similar in the 30-06. |

Go here, http://www.whittakerguns.com/ Go to the AR section, go halfway down and you will see it. Here are what the descriptions say. Cobb MCR300 Lothar-Walther 24in Stainless Steel Match barrel & VLTOR stock MCR300 .30/06 w/2 20rnd mags, Hard carry case, Harris bipod, & Otis cleaning kit $2,239.99 MCR300SCOPE .30/06 w/2 20rnd mags, Hard carry case, Harris bipod, Otis cleaning kit, & Burris 4-12 Laser Range finding Balistic Plex scope $2,959.99 |
Then buy a standard AR15 and a Dillon 650XL reloading press. |
| Found in article in book of the ar-15 its put out by guns&ammo has the cobbs modular rifle. The same lower can be used with 9mm, .40, .45, .223, 7.62x39, 6.5 gren, 6.8x43, .308, .30-06. With there system change the upper and the marwell disconnects from the lower to except the different calibers. Very versatile systems if you have the $. Hope that helps some. |
![]() $2K is fairly high just to have a semi auto 30-06 AR. .....but there is JUST something about the '06 that I like..... |
well, the M1 is a 30-06 semi-auto... and its alot cheaper. |
Don't do it. Don't get a Garand. You will only start thinking something went terribly wrong when they made the M-16 the US military rifle. I have been dealing with that problem most my adult life, it is not pretty. Next thing you know it you will have a BAR next to your Garand and it will all be because some one pointed out that it was a 30-06 and kicked AR butt in the area of dependability (that statement may get me banned from this site |
You got away with just having to have a BAR? crap! I ended up with 2 of those, 6 garands, and 3 m14/M1A's.... THEN got into AR's |
Your collection puts mine to shame....... Granted, I'm not lucky enough to find 'shooter' grade Garands and M1A's..... (Have only one of each and an AR10). But I still want a 30-06 AR...... |
