So im gettin ready to order parts to put together my first AR and i am wondering about the current laws of pre-ban post-ban stuff . Does any of this matter anymore ? Like can you mix and match pre and post uppers and lowers ? Im in Texas if it matters . I am lookin at getting a DPMS lower from Cheaper than dirt and building a basic 16" a2 with collapsible stock , maybe a detachable handle version . Havnt decided yet . Any help would be greatly appreciated as for pointing me in the right direction . Thanks ,

Jeremy

I don't think it matters. I would get the flat top upper just in case you ever want optics. How much are the lowers going for at cheaper than diry nowdays?

thats what i figured , but you can mount optics on the carry handle also , right ?

Dpms stripped is $120 i think . Not sure where else in dfw are to look . Im actually west of metro so dont wanna drive all the way to dallas to save $20 . I would just order one , but i have no one with FFL

My best advice is to slow down and start reading if you haven't done so.

Take a look at the equipment exchange and get an idea of what is available.

If you are going to mount optics, I'd suggest you go with a flat top. much more versitle.

There are many excellent vendors in the EE selling lowers and everything else. I'd skip CTD and look here.

You can mount optics on the carry handle but it's not the prefered method. It's hard to get a proper check weld for some people. If you wait until the next Fort Worth gun show at the end of December you can get one from Robbie at Lonestar Wholesale. I believe the dpms stripped lowers go for $99 and the complete go for $220. His website is listed under the industry section. I know a month is a month is a long time to wait but the $20 you save can be used to buy other parts. Just my suggestion. In the meantime you can be looking for the upper or kit you want. Your wallet is going to hate you.

wise advice,

there are plenty of dealers in the Dallas area willing to do transfers, head on over to our Texas Hometown forum and ask around.

i'm in Houston or i'd help ya out.

definitely order a flattop, gives you the optics option. mounting optics on top of a carry handle is not the best solution.

why, 1st off it will work, but your range will be very limited from where you zero the rifle. the parallax is too great to work effectively

much better to kkeep the optics as close to the bore of the rifle as possible.

While looking for an FFL holder I met a dealer who ordered and sold three rifles to me for $30 over his cost +tax and shipping for each one. I came out at least $200 under retail on each one. I've bought several items from him for way below retail.......DPMS 308 mags for $24 for example.   You can find FFL holders in your area by going to GUNS AMERICA.........probably several other places too.  Have fun..........Texas is gun friendly country unless you live in Travis County.

Hey ,, u can never have too many guns right ???  Now i have an excuse to have 2 ar's since i already bought the complete one , and i will buy at least 1 if not 2 more receivers for that price . Considering i got 2 mags and a case with the DPMS i bought , i figured i would have only saved about $50 building one . Actually , probably ended up spending more on options building one
