Hi Guys, I am thinking of doing some custom barrel work on one of my
AR,s, but thy spindle bore on my lathe is only 3/4", so that means the
barrel extension has to come off. I am wondering ,what is the Dia.of
the barrel when I remove the Bar ext, how do I get it off.. thanks for you

Not sure of the dimension under the extension (would have to measure),  i do know that it is just screwed on. It is, however torqued on to about 100 to 110 ft/lbs and uses a special wrench that holds it by the lugs. The gas port in the barrel is aligned and drilled AFTER installation, and unless you were moving the hole, you might find it tough to get it realigned.

All in all, i would buy a spindle adapter with a larger throat.

What is a spindle adapter with a larger throat?   Forget it, I am kinda slow tonight.

What are you trying to do that requires the extension to be removed?

The barrel just forward of the extension measures typically ~0.980 or so, just a hair smaller than the 1.000" extension.

If you are trying to turn down forward of the front sight, you are going to want to use a steady rest just behind the front sight to avoid chatter if you want to avoid cutting more than angel hairs off the barrel and probably not even then.  Not worth trying to save ~1" on the length of the extension.

If you have a steady rest, use it and chuck the muzzle in the headstock and pull your tailstock off.  If not, cruise Ebay until you find a steady rest and buy it.

The barrel dilemma is exactly why I bought a 11x36" lathe with a 1 3/8" spindle bore over a SB 9".  A well known FAL builder used a 3/4" bored lathe for a very long time, so it is not a show stopper.

You need tools from Brownells or others to remove the extension.  Be sure to remove the index pin before torquing away.  It has to go back together exactly so an index mark would be a great thing too.

It is an expensive tool.  $54.  Brownells # 841-015-001
