Okay, So I'm thinking I want to do a 20" build. I've currently got three M4geries, but I'm thinking about getting a Colt LE6921 M4 (SBR) when I get back from deployment, so I'd like to convert one of the M4geries (the franken-gun) to a 20" full size rifle. Now, with my M4geries, I've gone kind of overboard, they are my "go to" guns. Spared no expense on them, almost all Colt parts, BUIS, KAC RAS, the whole nine yards. As a matter of fact, my issued weapon over here is patterned after my "go to" M4gery, to the point of using my own ACOG. Therefore, my 20" build will be more of a "fun gun" than a duty arm, so I can "slum" it, .I've already decided that I want to make another replica of an Army rifle, but I can't decide whether I'd rather have an A2 or an A4 clone. I know, I know, buy both, and maybe I will, but say you could only have one, which would you prefer? An A4 clone, with a KAC M5 RAS (already have one) and TA31F ACOG(already have one); or An A2 clone, with an Aimpoint ML2 (already have one) on a cantilevered "gooseneck" mount? I've already got all the accessories needed for either, really, all I'd need is the upper receiver and A2 stock set. Also, who makes the best value for money in the 20" world? My only requirements would be gov't profile barrel, chrome lining, and un-neutered BCG. Also, who makes A4 uppers with "F" marked FSB's? I prefer 1/7, but 1/9 would probably be acceptable as well, depending. Same for A2 stocks. Thanks, ~Augee |

I would go A2. I'm just a sucker for the classic lines. For the A2 build, I would use a Bushmaster barrel and a good A2 upper. For the A4...I would use CMMG. They use the correct site hight and I believe the Govt. profile barrel. However, CMMG uses the extended M-4 feed ramps so you would need an upper with the extended cuts. C.M.T. makes a great upper for $95 bucks complete. Stay safe and thank you for your service Pete |
This shows how "Over The Top" people are here!! Showing the USG how it should be done!! Is the A2 even being used over there at the present time?? IIRC, the USMC is using the A4. I'd guess that the only proper path, in order to spend as much money as possible, would be all Colt or FN. Though it is doable with the BM, just use the taller front site post they offer to adjust for the non "F" FSB they have. |

The A2's are definitely still alive and kicking. A lot of reserve components are still issuing them to units in theater, with gooseneck Aimpoints. Not to mention the Air Force and Navy, who're still getting A2's. As a matter of fact, I think I see more of them, at least in my area, than A4's. Still predominantly M4's, though. But there's some great stuff around, got a chance to hang out with some SeaBee's, with M16A-3's, rollmarked "Colt M16AE-3," the Aussies with their AUG's, and the Air Force, ran into some AF guys who were sporting "M16A2's," except they were built on Model 601 and 602 lowers! Those nice retro lowers had been scrawled on with a dremel, by hand, to mark both sides "burst" over the "auto." ~Augee |

Eh, my OCD would require that I buy an A1 style lower if I wanted to go retro, plus I was never too hot on triangle handguards. Plus, none of the optics options would work, either. The same then goes for the SPR type, too. This project has more to do with what to do with an extra lower and a spare optic than it does with "filling gaps." Since I already have a go-to gun, and a backup, really the rest amount to toys, and I'm a service rifle geek, and either way I cut it, I'll have an extra optic, but I don't want to sell any of them, not that they'd sell for much anyways, the TA31F I've got with me now over here (soon to be replaced by a TA01NSN and Trijicon Red Dot combo), while still a great sight, has got so many scratches and dings from being knocked around in everything from a Toyota Camry to an M1A1 Abrams wouldn't fetch too much on the secondhand market, even if the optics still work perfectly. An SPR would be great to have, I'd actually love to have an SDM-R clone, but considering that I'd have to buy so much new stuff for it, instead of just a 20" upper and an A2 stock, I don't think I could swing for it. ~Augee |

I voted A4, I have a Colt M16A2 upper on a Match Target lower myself and I really don't like to use a cantilever mount with it because it doesn't work too well on fixed carry handles, the flat top picatinny rail is much better to mount optics on. Sabre Defence makes a nice Mil-spec 20" A4 barrel assembly with M4 feedramps which would be perfect for M4 upper receiver. As for an A2 buttstock group I got a new Colt M16A2 take off and I would recommend it. If you want to have a carry handle on it sometimes just get a detachable carry handle. |
