I recently bought a complete upper. It has a 20" heavy barrel, no markings, non-chrome bore. How do I tell what profile I have? What is an HBAR, and why are those not desirable - too heavy? Is there any point to turning down the OD of this barrel? Good reasons not to? I have a lathe capable of this. |

Not all barrel makers stamp their barrels. Depends on who sold you the upper as to what barrel they put on it. Nothing wrong with non-chrome bores, in fact, they are a bit more accurate. Pull the handguards to tell what profile the barrel is. HBAR is a term for the profile of the barrel. HBAR's are usually the same size from the chamber region of the barrel out to the gas block. Not desirable? They are not much heavier than the so-called "light weight" barrels. They are usually stiffer, hence more accurate and they also dissipate heat better. I would not turn the barrel down myself. Just buy another barrel and swap them out as needed. |
